Planning LED lighting for a manufacturing plant

A manufacturing lighting assessment should follow the work performed in each area. Production floors, inspection stations, storage spaces and walkways can have different lighting needs even when they share one building.

Describe the tasks and operating schedule

Identify detailed assembly or inspection work, equipment movement and any shifts that operate outside normal daylight hours. Include areas where shadows, uneven coverage or repeated fixture maintenance affect the workspace.

Review fixture layout around equipment

Record ceiling and mounting heights, machinery locations and any obstructions between the fixtures and work surfaces. The proposed layout should account for the usable floor area and the workstations below, rather than fixture spacing alone.

Match controls to actual use

Discuss which areas are continuously occupied and which are used intermittently. Occupancy controls and dimming should be considered alongside the work pattern and the site’s operational requirements. Explain any areas where lighting must remain available during production.

Prepare for an occupied-site installation

Share access restrictions, production schedules and any site-specific installation requirements during the assessment. This information helps define the proposed work and the sequence to discuss before installation is scheduled.

Plan your New Jersey lighting upgrade

Explore our manufacturing facility lighting for more detail on lighting needs, fixtures and controls. Review the utility-funded LED lighting program to understand how potential incentives relate to your project. Eligibility, available funding and any customer contribution depend on the utility program and the site assessment. Compare the program routes and project-cost questions in our New Jersey lighting incentive guide.
